Panorama of Varis and across to Skye

Welcome

We’ve tried to make Varis a comfortable practical base from which you can explore the wealth that Skye and Lochalsh offers for those interested in history, wildlife, culture or simply want to immerse themselves in the sheer beauty of the area.

Accommodation

The house has 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6, which can be configured as two super-king doubles and one twin or one super-king double and two twin rooms to suit your requirements.   We can in addition provide a travel cot, highchair etc if you wish to bring a little one. We use oversized duvets with pure cotton linens. Bedrooms have blackout blinds or curtains, ample storage space and hairdryers.

There is a spacious shower-room with near level access close to the bedrooms and a generous shower-room off the utility room, both refurbished in 2021.

The house is spacious with a snug/TV room as well as the enormous sitting/dining room with its views across Loch Alsh to Skye, real fire and TV.

We enjoy cooking using the wealth of local ingredients available and we’ve made sure Varis’s kitchen is well equipped with high quality appliances including a SMEG induction hob, double oven, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher. With high quality knives, pans, and a range of cookbooks, guests can enjoy cooking. Or opt for the many excellent restaurants nearby.

The house is a great base for exploring.  As kayakers, we understand the importance of good drying facilities.  The utility room has a washing machine, a tumble dryer, and drying space with additional outdoor and indoor drying space available.  A dehumidifier is available to speed up being ready for the next day’s adventure.

Outisde there is plenty of space to park. The south facing garden has chairs and tables and plenty of space. The garage has light and power and guests are welcome to use this for bikes, boats etc.

Pets

Visiting cat
We welcomed a pair of cats from Belgium.

We will also take up to three dogs at a modest extra charge subject to a few rules.  Owners should be aware that the garden is enclosed by agricultural style fencing so is not suitable for determined escapologists. There are miles of livestock free woodland walks direct from our garden. Service dogs are welcome without charge or restrictions.

Accessibility

We do our best to accommodate the needs of all guests including those with disabilities.   As the accommodation is on one floor, the house is generally suitable for those with some mobility issues, if they can manage the 5 steps up to the house.  See our Access Statement or call us to discuss your needs.

Environment

We know visitors to the Highlands care about the environment and so do we. When we bought the house in 2014, the EPC rating was a D. We wanted to the house to be as carbon neutral as possible so installed 4kW of solar panels and an air source heat pump so we use some of our own generation to heat the house and provide hot water. We have also replaced all the glazing with modern double glazed units. We minimise the use of harmful chemicals and ask guests help too. In early 2022 we replaced the ASHP with a more up to date model.

In late 2022 an 7kW EV charger was installed for guest use. but we encourage guests to have a low car or no car day.

Our EPV is now B.
